[GR] Μετά από βόλτες με την κολλητή μου στην Kamakura, μας έπιασε το βράδυ στην παραλία. Ο αφρός των κυμάτων του ειρηνικού ωκεανού ήταν γαλάζιο φωσφοριζέ και η εγώ η καψερή τρόμαζα ότι ήταν μόλυνση. Αργότερα που το έψαξα, έμαθα ότι κάνουν το κέφι τους κάποιοι οργανισμοί της θάλασσας. Τελικά, εκείνη η μέρα, συγκεκριμένα στις 5 Μαΐου 2017, ήταν η μόνη τα τελευταία χρόνια που το φαινόμενο της βιοφωταύγειας ήταν ορατό στις ακτές της Καναγκάβα. Το φαινόμενο οφείλεται στους οργανισμούς πλαγκτον Noctiluca scintillans, οι οποίοι φωσφορίζουν στο σκοτάδι υπό συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες του χημικού περιβάλλοντός τους. Ευτυχώς, οι συγκεκριμένοι οργανισμοί δεν είναι βλαβεροί προς τα ψάρια ή τους ανθρώπους.

[EN] For the entire day, we’ve been walking around Kamakura with my friend, until it was already evening. We ended up at the beach and noticed that the foam of the waves was glowing with a neon-blue colour. I started freaking out, thinking that that is what pollution looks like at the ocean. Afterwards, I looked further into it and realized that some sea microorganisms were having fun with the waves. Turns out that that specific evening, on the 5th of May 2017, it was a rare occurrence where the phenomenon of bioluminescence was visible at Kanagawa’s beaches. A plankton species called Noctiluca scintillans glows at night under specific conditions of its chemical environment. Thankfully, this type of microorganism activity is not harmful towards fish or humans.
