[GR] Κατά πλειοψηφία, οι δυτικοί λαοί ισχυρίζονται ότι οι Ασιάτες δεν γνωρίζουν τι εστί ειρωνεία. Αυτό το διαπίστωσα και εγώ η ίδια όταν προσπάθησα να κάνω τα κομψά μου αστειάκια, τα οποία γίνονταν πάντα αντιληπτά ως κυριολεξία και οριακά δεν έμπαινα σε μπελάδες. Έλα μου όμως που η λέξη σαρκασμός υπάρχει στο ιαπωνικό λεξιλόγιο και δείγματα σαρκασμού είναι άφθονα στο ντόπιο τουίτερ. Ο σαρκασμός γράφεται 皮肉 και προφέρεται χινίκου. Όσοι έχουν μάθει τα βασικά ιδεογράμματα, πιθανόν να παραξενευτούν επειδή η λέξη φαίνεται να σημαίνει «δέρμα και κρέας». Ναι, όπως σας στα λέω.

Οι Έλληνες μάθαμε την ειρωνεία από τα τραγικά έργα του θεάτρου. Οι Ασιάτες την έμαθαν από τα βουδιστικά κείμενα το Μποντιντάρμα (ή Νταρούμα στα Ιαπωνικά), έναν μυθικό μοναχό του 5ου αιώνα. Γίνεται αναφορά στη λέξη 皮肉骨髄 (όπως συνήθως οι σημαντικές έννοιες συμπυκνώνονται σε τέσσερα γράμματα). Η σημασία των γραμμάτων είναι με τη σειρά: δέρμα, κρέας, κόκκαλα, μυελός. Ο Νταρούμα ενώ δίδασκε στους μαθητές του τον Βουδισμό Τσαν, έλεγε «έλαβες τα κόκκαλα μου» όταν είχαν αντιληφθεί το βαθύ νόημα. Αντίθετα, έλεγε «έλαβες τη σάρκα μου» όταν είχαν αντιληφθεί μόνο επιφανειακά τα διδάγματα. Η επιφανειακή, λανθασμένη ή ανάποδη σημασία ήταν η βασική έννοια που μέσα στους αιώνες μετεξελίχτηκε να σημαίνει τον σαρκασμό, με αρνητική χροιά. Αντίθετα, το 骨髄 (προφέρεται κοτσουτζούι) σημαίνει την ουσία. Αλήθεια, πόσο εντυπωσιακό που άσχετοι μεταξύ τους πολιτισμοί κατέληξαν στην λέξη «σάρκα» για την περιγραφή της κακής, μειωτικής ειρωνείας;

Παρένθεση: αυτός ο Νταρούμα είναι η έμπνευση για τα χαρακτηριστικά στρογγυλά κουκλάκια, τα οποία χρησιμοποιούνται για ευχές. [EN] The majority of westerners believes that Asians do not understand irony. I had the chance to verify that myself, when I tried to make my classy jokes, which were unfortunately almost always interpreted quite literally, and I barely stayed out of trouble. However, a word for “irony, sarcasm” exists in the Japanese vocabulary and one can find abundant examples of sarcasm in Japanese twitter. The word for irony is 皮肉, which pronounced as hiniku. By now, those who have studied the basic kanji are probably confused about why the word seems to mean “flesh and meat”. Well, it is what it is.

The Greeks (and consequently western civilization) defined irony through ancient theater dramas. Asian cultures understood irony through the religious texts that contained the teachings of Bodhidharma (or Daruma in Japanese), a legendary monk from the 5th century C.E. The text makes a reference to 皮肉骨髄 (as usual, important concepts are compressed into four-character compound words). The meaning of the letters is: skin, mean, bones, marrow. While Daruma was teaching Chan Buddhism to his students, he was using the phrase “you have received my bones” when they seemed to understand the deeper meaning. On the contrary, he was telling them that they “have received his skin”, when they understood the teaching only superficially. This superficial, wrong or opposite notion was the primary meaning of the word 皮肉, which was modified across centuries to mean sarcasm with a negative connotation. Similarly, the word 骨髄 (pronounced koduzui) refers to the essence, the true self. How interesting that two so different cultures ended up using the term “skin” to describe the vile, nasty irony? (*Sarcasm is derived from the Greek word “sarka” which means skin).

P.S. This gentleman, Daruma, is the inspiration for the characteristic Daruma dolls, the ones that are used to make a wish. When one has a wish in mind, they can receive a Daruma doll with unpainted eye sockets, make the wish, paint a single eye and then wait. When the wish comes true, they are expected to draw the other eye. When the doll has fulfilled its purpose, it is returned to the temple to be ritually burnt. Daruma dolls have different colors depending on the type of the wish they are used for.
