[GR] Έχετε αναρωτηθεί ποτέ πώς ξεχωρίζει κανείς το φρέσκο σάκε; Έξω από τις βιομηχανίες των παρασκευαστηρίων σάκε κρέμονται κάτι τεράστιες χορταρένιες μπάλες. Λέγονται σουγκιντάμα (杉玉), εναλλακτικά και σακαμπάτα (酒旗), και είναι φτιαγμένες συνήθως από κλαδιά ιαπωνικού κέδρου. [EN] Have you ever wondered how one can tell the difference between fresh and dated Japanese sake? Outside the sake breweries you may come across these huge grass balls. They are called sugidama (杉玉), alternatively sakabata (酒旗), and are usually made from branches of Japanese cedar. When the brewery makes fresh sake, it hangs a new, lush green ball at its entrance. Slowly as time progresses, the branches change color and turn brown. This way, customers always know what to expect from the establishment’s sake. Curiously, passing through Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, in the British countryside, I was surprised to see sugidama hanging outside a local pub, the Garrick Inn. It seems that this custom has already spread beyond the Japanese borders (or that brew masters think alike).

* As a side note, the Garrick Inn is the oldest pub in Stratford-upon-Avon, with some of its parts standing since the 14th century, and presumably haunted.
