April is the month of new beginnings, may that be school or job. April (四月) is also the 4th month of the calendar, pronounced shi-gatsu, which sounds like 死-death. New beginnings can be tough, that’s why the suicide numbers rise during this specific month in Japan. After the initial adjustment period passes, in May comes the week-long holiday, known as Golden week. A lot of people find it hard to return to their daily routine after that small break, so the suicide numbers go up again. Luckily this trend seems to slow down currently. My coworkers even joked that this year there were not many sudden train stops due to someone falling in the tracks. I guess if you live in such a society, you learn to accept it as fact.
Look up.
